Character: Grimsley
Age: 37-43
Canon: Pokémon Ultra Sun
Canon Point: Post-game
Background: Grimsley was born into an aristocratic family that lost all of its wealth sometime in his teen years or young adulthood. In response, he started working in a casino and acquired a gambling addiction. He became an elite four member with his dark-type team.
After experiencing some serious grief, he decided to surf with his Pokémon all the way to Pokémon Hawaii from Pokémon California. Ever since he has been a leaderboard-ranking surfer and a tough opponent in the Battle Tree, a place set up for experienced battlers.
Personality: Grimsley is definitely an oddball. He acts entirely of his own accord and seems to have abandoned any past loyalties and responsibilities. He came from a rich family and tried to gamble the money back, but failed. In the manga it is stated that he was a casino dealer for ten years leading to his gambling addiction. His family is never mentioned again. Gambling has seeped into his personality or brought out what was already there.
He is an adrenaline junkie. He gambles wherever he goes, be it talking to strangers or working it in during other important missions. In the game he makes you guess how a coin will flip and seems to always carry a coin for that purpose. In the manga he played a gambling card game with some workers while trying to sniff out some bad guys as well as with the protagonist over where some Pokémon would make holes. His speech is riddled with gambling metaphors, like calling the Pokémon and the moves they have “cards in your hand”.
Grimsley is very brave, but a little stupid in that he takes huge risks. This is in duality with his gambling nature; so he’s not afraid of much. In US&M you can find him wandering outside a destroyed city. He warns the protagonist about the gang activity, but doesn’t seem concerned about it himself.
He’s also an expert surfer, but the competitive tracks are long and treacherous, rife with inhabiting Pokémon. To even get to Alola (Pokémon Hawaii) he had to surf out there, and he did so on a despairing whim. The wording from the infobook indicates that he didn’t even know he would encounter Alola in particular. So if not stupid, it is at least self-preservation adverse.
He hates losing, but when he talks about it has a very pragmatic approach. When he loses, he says something a little silly, but true. He mentions that when one person wins, another must lose. (Duh) But he doesn’t pout about it verbally. But his body language is very angry even if his words are calm.
Grimsley is prone to despair and dark moods. This is shown in a couple ways— With his appearance, his dark type Pokémon (that usually indicate things about the trainer’s personality), and the fact that he went grey and abandoned his life over the course of four years.
However, he also is genuinely a good person. He wants to help others, and offers helpful unsolicited advice and bears gifts for the protagonist (who is a stranger to him at that point).
Abilities: Grimsley is an adept gambler, a master Pokémon battler, and an expert surfer.

Emotion Sample: [Once again, Grimsley found himself on the shores of somewhere unfamiliar. He sat up, drenched and chilly, clothes stuck to himuncomfortably. What happened… Did he wipe out and drift here? This looked nothing like Alola.]
[ He chcked his sleeve pockets, finding one fewer Pokemon than he remembered carrying with him. Dread swelled in his belly. Where could it be, or who was it? He immediately let out the Pokémon from their balls and… Alright, that was weird. This wasn’t the group he had at all. He jumped into the water, treading as he looked into the lake.]
Sharpedo, help me see if there’s a Pokeball I missed!
[The beast made a gruff sound in reply, and dutifully started scanning underwater. Grimsley dove under himself, the confusion and dread feeling like it was bursting from his heart. His fingertips dusted along the lake bottom as his vision began to cloud with… ink? Blood? In the water?]
[He sped to the surface, taking a deep breath as he paddled to shore and called his Pokemon back as he tried to figure out where it was coming from, only to notice it welling up on his skin and dripping onto the ground with rivulets of water. Only then did he notice the amulet hanging around his neck begin to glow.]
